What a 21st!

Had a great time at a family friend's 21st birthday party. Lazz and I were the DJs and we played a wide range of music from 80's to Funk to Rnb to House. The speakers were 12" JBL Horn speakers with built in AMPs, and we took our own equipment -- Numark CDN-36 rackmount CD players a Numark DM3050 (3 channel) mixer and 2 x Technics turntables.

The party was very well organised -- lots of good food and deserts, some really nice speeches, and some really good belly dancers as well! The music was good too (of course) and we got a large group of people dancing to RnB and House. Definitely the most entertaining 21st I've played at so far!

Chillout House @ Inck!

It was layed back music at Inck tonight. I'm not talking "layed back" as in the stuff I usually play (which is layed back compared to what the DJ after me plays) but I'm talking layed back in the most layed back sense of the word -- i.e. the type of House music that makes you question whether it's House music at all!

I had to play layed back stuff because I was playing the first set starting 5 PM, so it was too early for the tunes I usually play. I had to spend a lot of time hunting down the most chilled-out tunes from my record collection. Most of these tunes ended up being a chill-out version of some of my favourite more upbeat tunes.

I had a lot of fun playing (and so did the people -- two of them actually told me they did!) and I enjoyed a lot of those tracks, most of which I had heard for the first time. It was a good change from the set I usually play -- I think I'll have to ask the manager to give me more chill-out sets in the future!

[Sunday Lounge] [LouLou Bar] [June 11th]

There will be a new night coming to town to lounge the shit outa all Melburnians -- Sunday Lounge, starting Sunday June 11th.

The venue will be the comfy and layed back LouLou bar on Toorak Road, opposite the South Yarra train station. The menu will be some real House music -- soulful, deep, quirky, bumpy, groovy, funky -- you name it, anything that will keep you lounged-out and bopping your head to the beats!!

DJs Mike Jules and Luvvy will be starting off the night with guest DJs in the following weeks. Entry is $0.

Come on over and Lounge with us!!

Vanilla Room

I'll be playing at Vanilla Room in Sydney early next month! Looking forward to this one -- an afternoon gig in a nice cozy venue. Best of all, looks like my favourite tracks will really fit in to this gig! Will post up a flyer and pictures later.

Swindlers Bar and Balcony, Mt. Hotham!

My visit to Mt. Hotham for 2006 is now confirmed -- I managed to get myself a gig at one of the best (if not the best) club at Mt. Hotham -- Swindlers Bar and Balcony!

Other than their good sound system, the view from Swindlers Balcony is breathtaking. Have a look at the picture of the balcony at the top! Imagine being able to drop your favourite track, walk over to the snow-covered balcony, have a bit of a look around at the snow-covered mountains, and go back just in time for the next track!

Playing at the Dinner Plain Hotel was awesome last snow season, but Swindlers is going to be hair-raising -- in more than one way!

Seven Nightclub Door Policy?

Just got back from Seven Nightclub -- went to see Clint Hargreaves play some Chicago House at a new night that was being tested, but as I had suspected, I wasn't let in, even after I said I was on the guest-list. Reason was "members only" -- but a lot of non-members were let in because they were female.

I'm sure the bouncers had their reasons (e.g. trying to get a proper male-female balance in the club), but I was on the guest-list, and the club was supposed to be testing to see how many people would come for this new night. Unfortunately it didn't look like the bouncers had the faintest clue. Soon afterwards the bouncers got into a fight with a bunch of people in the queue. The people in the queue started it by getting verbal, but looked like the bouncers took it as an opportunity to take out their frustration. So instead of trying to push them away, the bouncers started provoking them further.

I left soon afterwards -- the bouncers' bulk seemed to be compressing their brains. They were acting like such retards that I wouldn't have been let in even if I had owned the place.

LOOP Melbourne

I went to see some friends play at Stellar Bar last night and they took me to a nice bar called LOOP, off Bourke Street. Entry to LOOP was free, and they weren't really strict about the dress code. Other than the really nice cocktail menu, the bar area had a projector that used an entire wall to project a lot of abstract images and videos. Interestingly, the projected footage was done live by a VJ, with a video camera and some other interesting gadgets. There was also a DJ playing some ambient, chillout music in a back room, and there was another small projector with the same footage being projected on a wall right next to the DJ.

Really nice unique art-oriented bar. See pictures below (taken from their website).

Friday Night at Inck -- or not?

It's not often that you go with all your Vinyl for a gig and realise that the turntables are not set up, and soon afterwards, that you won't be playing because the AMP had blown a few minutes ago! Talk about an anticlimax. But since some people were coming over to see me play, the owner was nice enough to give us some free drink coupons. He also gave me a gig next Saturday, so I can't complain!

About ten people showed up, so it ended up being a fun night. Lots of food and drinks kept everyone happy.

20 Records for Sale on eBay!

I've put up some of my older Vinyls for sale on ebay. I just don't have the same taste in music as I did when I bought them! I'd classify them as 'funky house', but not really 'funky' in the 'chunky' or 'bumpy' Mark Farina / Joey Youngman style, but 'funky' in the 'vocal' / 'groovy', style if that makes any sense.

The item is on a 10-day listing with the starting price set to $0.99. I thought I'd do a bit of experimentation with a low starting price -- I haven't got much to lose! I'd be happy if I can get enough money from the sale to buy two new records.
