Best Places to Leave Flyers in CBD

If you've got a House event happening somewhere in the CBD, here's my list of the most appropriate places to leave flyers. I'll be adding to this list as I find new places.

1) HMV Bourke St. will target most of the general music loving community. If the location for placing flyers is still on the top floor which is the House/RnB section, even better! (the RnB crowd wouldn't be interested in a House night anyway).

2) Central Station Somerset Place (off Elizabeth St). will target mostly DJs. Probably not as effective as HMV for flyer placement but still a great place with a large table left aside solely for flyers.

3) RMIT Swanston, Building 10 Level 4 Cafe is appropriate for me because I study at RMIT. But this place is very busy, and the coffee shop is the busiest. They've already got a some flyers for different events placed on the coffee shop's counter, so they seem to be OK with anyone coming and leaving flyers. This will target mostly students, of course.

4) The Vault cafe on Swanston Street below RMIT Building 10 (and below ground level!) is a nice funky place. There's plenty of flyers for many types of events there already.

5) Collectors Corner Swanston Street has plenty of flyers right under the counter. All the flyers are a bit close together so not many people will see our flyers unless they're looking at the entire flyer area in detail.

6) Platypus Shoes, Melbourne Central has an area on the floor right next to the entrance where a few flyers are kept.

7) QV Cnr Swanston and Lonsdale seems a good place to leave flyers, but I haven't found a flyer-friendly place in QV yet.

Not a very complete list! Feel free to leave your ideas and I'll add it to this list.

Flyer Printing at 13c Per Print?

Compared to how much we've payed in the past to get flyers printed, 13 cents per print is a bargain. The idea is to get the flyer to be of the ratio 1:1.5 so that they can be fitted into a 4" x 6" (i.e. 10cm x 15cm) photo. Basically, you then get the flyers printed as photos, from the cheapest photo printing place. The cheapest I've found so far for photo printing is 13 cents per photo, from GetDigital.

Sending something off to print via GetDigital is very easy; log in to GetDigital, upload the picture, resize or crop or do any of the basic effects, and then choose a quantity and send it off to print! They usually print it on the same day, and you can collect it from the nearest pharmacy registered with them (my closest pharmacy registered with them was a 10 min walk) within two working days.

I used GetDigital to print 310 flyers for Laidback @ Lustre Lounge and it worked great. There was a small problem though; the small sample they showed online was not exactly what the end product looked like -- about two millimeters were cropped off from the top of the flyer. No big dramas though, I know what to do next time to prevent this from happening again.

I'm confused why printing photos are cheaper than printing the same image on cheaper quality paper from a normal shop. Or maybe there's cheaper printing shops and I just haven't found them!

Laidback @ Lustre Lounge

Myself and DJ Pound will be spinning some laid back House at the posh and intimate venue Lustre Lounge, on Flinders Lane, every Thursday 5pm - 9pm. Lustre Lounge is a nice little bar, with a nice little balcony overlooking Flinders Lane, and they're renowned for their cocktails, and great selection of cigars! The timing of the event will be perfect for the office crowd wanting to cut back and relax after a long day at work.

What better way to sip on quality cocktails on the balcony than by listening to some quality house music!

Beach Party Melbourne!

It's that time once again for the yearly beach party, organised by one of the biggest house-heads in Melbourne, Mr. Jules -- Mike Jules.

The extravaganza will be held on 16th December and has some of Melbourne's finest House DJs lined up, including Matt Promo who recently broke the world record for the longest DJ set (87 hours!). The party will surely be a truly awesome day out in the sun & sand, with some fine House music, right next to the beach!!!

I missed this party last year as it was held on the same day as the Tsunami Fundraiser I had organised, but I'll definitely be going this year. The location is Elwood beach, and a map is shown on the left. The line-up is shown below, more details out soon!!

1-2 little chris

2-3 mike jules + dj luvvy
3-4 cuznmatt
4-5 ben vapid
5-6 matt promo
6-7 ben evans vs blinky
7-8 alex mckenzie
8-9 adrian

If you want to get there by public transport, go to Elsternwick train station, catch bus no. 246 (called "Elsternwick - La Trobe University") from the station, and get off at stop 2. Here's the route map of 246. Stop 2 is right infront of the beach party!

DJ Luvvy @ Swindlers

Hmm, I just came across this advertisement for my July gig @ Swindler's Bar up in Mt. Hotham. The advertisement appeared on ski.com.au. I wonder why I didn't see his earlier -- maybe I just didn't have as much free time on my hands to search for my name on Google, as I do now! Better late than never I guess!

Open Decks @ Hush Bar

Mike and I decided today that it would be a good idea to hold open decks at Hush Bar, as a part of Sunday Lounge. We'll have the open decks every month, or every fortnight, depending on how many people are interested. The music will have to be house and preferably loungy. Here's the flyer -- the space on the slipmat is reserved for DJ names, set times and dates!

Another Sunday Lounge Poster!

I did a mistake with my last poster for Sunday Lounge: instead of desgining and printing it as a portrait, I designed and printed it as a landscape, resulting in much frustration, waste of time and money, and much embarassment.

The reason I did a landscape poster was because I got confused after I saw the posters for the other nights advertised outside Hush Bar. They were all resized down to around 20% of the original sizes (101x75cm) and put onto one page with "Thursday", "Friday", "Saturday" etc. written on top of the respective images, and the resized images were all in landscape. Little did I know that they were not originally in landscape -- they were all cropped from the original portrait image into smaller landscape images!

So in the end I wasted $65 for the poster, but then again, I can stick it on my wall at home to keep reminding my housemates to come to Sunday Lounge!

So here's the new poster in portrait. Doesn't look as good as the landscape version I reckon.

Sunday Lounge with Guest

Sunday Lounge has Pete Gordon (a.k.a. Random_Kiwi on ITM) as guest DJ this week, who'll be playing funky breaks and house from 7-9. Will be good to hear some breaks for a change!

Large Flyer for Sunday Lounge

Here's a new flyer I made for advertising our Sunday Lounge nights on a display area outside Hush Bar. The flyer has to be of size 75 x 101 cm, which means the image in the flyer has to be of a huge resolution to be able to fit those dimensions (unless I use many smaller images). After searching morgueFile.com, I managed to find an image of a couch that looks good enough and is big enough for the flyer.

Sunday Lounge Kicks Off @ Hush Bar!

The launch of our new night Sunday Lounge at Hush Bar was a success. For the first few hours the place was empty, but suddenly, out of nowhere, a heap of people flooded in, and the place was reasonably well occupied. Not sure if the people flooded in because of the music, or because of the football world cup that was being projected live onto the wall!! Probably the latter, but anyhow it was a good night.

We'll be getting the flyers from the printers by tomorrow. Here's the flyer that Mike Jules made for our Sunday nights.

NYE 06!!

DJ LazZ and I have been invited by LustreLounge to play at their NYE 06 masquerade party! This is probably my biggest gig of the year -- 6 hours of music ranging from RnB and Retro to Funky and Commercial House! LazZ will spin the non-house music while I handle the Housy side of things.

This Week!

Back from the US and after a long 3 week silence, looking forward to spinning some of that stuff at a place called Khokolat tonight. A bit intimidated by the digital Numark equipment at Khokolat :-P .. Hope the pitch riding doesn't get affected too much!

Here's the banner

Also doing my monthly gig at Stellar Bar Friday night 12.30 - close. Have to take my wn equipment this time as Stellar Bar was broken into and all the equipment stolen!!
